Roulette Variants Compared

The only thing that matters on the wheel is how often the zero costs you. Below are the four variants you will actually encounter at UK-licensed casinos — ranked by how favourable the maths is to you.

37 (0, 1–36)
House Edge
2.70%

French Roulette (La Partage)

Pockets
37 (0, 1–36)
House Edge

Best for: Even-money bettors (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low)

American Roulette

Pockets
38 (0, 00, 1–36)
House Edge

Evolution Lightning Roulette

RTP

warningStrategy Myths — Read First

No Betting System Beats the Wheel

Martingale, Fibonacci, D'Alembert, Labouchère — every progression system sold online claims to "guarantee" a profit. They do not. The maths is settled, and it has been for over a century.

Martingale

Double your bet after every loss. Fails because of (a) table max-bet limits, (b) your finite bankroll, and (c) the persistent 2.7% edge on every spin regardless of history. Wizard of Odds.

Fibonacci

Bet the Fibonacci sequence (1,1,2,3,5,8…) after losses. Same failure mode as Martingale: hits table limits, exhausts bankroll, cannot change expected value per spin.

D'Alembert

Add one unit after a loss, remove one after a win. Feels safer than Martingale. It isn't. The house edge on every bet remains 2.7% (European) or 5.26% (American) — forever.

The only variable you actually control is which variant you play. Moving from American (5.26% edge) to French La Partage (1.35% edge) reduces the house's expected take by almost 75% — more than any betting system can ever "generate".

The Gambler's Fallacy — Why “Due” Numbers Don't Exist

If you have ever looked at a display board showing the last 20 spins — “RED, RED, RED, RED, BLACK is surely due” — you have encountered the gambler's fallacy. The wheel has no memory. Each spin on a fair European wheel has exactly:

1 / 37
Chance of any specific number (Straight Up)
18 / 37
Chance of Red (or Black) = 48.65%
0%
Influence of previous spins on next spin

The probability of 10 reds in a row is about 1 in 784. The probability of red on spin 11, given the previous 10 were red, is still 18/37 (48.65%). Those are not the same question. Believing they are is one of the oldest mistakes in probability theory — and the entire reason casinos display those result boards in the first place.

How to Play Online Roulette — Step by Step

  1. 1

    Choose a UKGC-licensed casino

Check the operator's footer for a UK Gambling Commission licence number and verify it at the UKGC public register. Our top UK casinos list is pre-filtered to licensed operators only.

  2. 2

    Complete age & identity verification

Under UKGC LCCP 3.2.8, verification happens before your first deposit is allowed to fund gameplay. Have your photo ID and a utility bill ready.

  3. 3

    Pick your variant carefully

Filter the casino's game lobby for "European" or "French" roulette. Avoid the American variant unless you have a very specific reason.

  4. 4

Set a session budget and deposit limit

Every UKGC-licensed casino must let you set deposit limits and reality-check reminders. Set them before you play — not after.

  5. 5

Place bets within the table limits

Table minimums are usually £0.10 – £1.00. Check the payout ratio next to each bet type — it should match the payouts in our table above.

  6. 6

Cash out when you reach your target

Set a stop-loss and a stop-win. Winning streaks end. Withdrawing protects you from the variance swinging back.

Roulette Glossary — Plain English

House Edge
The casino's statistical advantage over the player, expressed as a % of each bet. European: 2.7%. American: 5.26%. French (even money): 1.35%.
RTP (Return to Player)
The inverse of house edge. A 2.7% edge means 97.3% RTP — over infinite spins the wheel returns 97.3% of stakes to players.
La Partage
French rule — if the ball lands on zero, half your even-money bet is returned. Cuts the edge on those bets to 1.35%.
En Prison
Alternative French rule — your even-money bet is "imprisoned" on zero and held for the next spin. Wins or loses in full next spin.
Inside Bet
Any bet placed on numbers 0–36 on the main grid. Higher payouts, lower probability.
Outside Bet
Bets placed around the number grid — Red/Black, Odd/Even, Dozens, Columns. Lower payout, higher probability.
Call Bet / Announced Bet
Traditional French bets covering groups of numbers on the wheel — Voisins du Zéro, Tiers du Cylindre, Orphelins, Jeu Zéro.
RNG Roulette
Software-based roulette where outcomes are generated by a tested Random Number Generator — faster, lower minimum bets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which roulette variant has the best odds?expand_more
French Roulette with the La Partage rule — the house edge drops to 1.35% on even-money bets (Red/Black, Odd/Even, High/Low) because half your bet is returned if the ball lands on zero. European Roulette is second-best at 2.70%. American Roulette (5.26%) should be avoided whenever a European option is available. Source: SafeCasinos RTP analysis.
Does the Martingale betting system actually work?expand_more
No. The Martingale — doubling your bet after every loss — does not overcome roulette's built-in house edge. Mathematicians at Wizard of Odds are clear: the system fails because of (a) table bet-limits that prevent you doubling indefinitely, (b) a finite bankroll, and (c) the persistent negative expectation on every spin. You cannot turn a negative-EV game positive by adjusting bet sizes. Source: Wizard of Odds — Roulette strategies.
What is the gambler's fallacy and why does it matter in roulette?expand_more
The gambler's fallacy is the belief that past results affect future independent outcomes — e.g. after 5 reds, black is “due”. It is false. Every roulette spin is statistically independent of every other spin. A fair European wheel has a 1/37 chance of any specific number on every spin, regardless of what came before. Tracking “hot” or “cold” numbers is entertainment, not strategy.
Is online roulette at UK casinos genuinely random?expand_more
At UKGC-licensed casinos, yes. The Random Number Generators (RNGs) powering RNG roulette are independently tested and certified by approved testing houses (eCOGRA, iTech Labs, GLI). Live dealer roulette uses physical wheels shown on camera — you see the physics in real time. The UK Gambling Commission requires RNG audit reports as part of every licence.
How do I verify a UK casino's roulette RTP?expand_more
Reputable casinos publish the theoretical return-to-player (RTP) for every game in the game information panel or the footer of the game tile. For live roulette, check the provider's own site: Evolution, NetEnt and Playtech all publish RTPs on their product pages. If a casino refuses to disclose the RTP, that is a red flag.
When does the UK casino verify my identity when I play roulette?expand_more
Under the UKGC's Licence Conditions and Codes of Practice (LCCP 3.2.8), UK casinos must perform frictionless age-verification checks at or before registration, and complete full identity verification (ID, proof of address) before your first deposit is allowed to fund gameplay. Some operators complete this in minutes; others may request documents before your first withdrawal. Source: UKGC age verification guide.
What is the minimum stake for online roulette in the UK?expand_more
Most UK-licensed casinos offer minimum stakes from £0.10 to £0.50 per bet on RNG roulette, rising to £0.50–£1.00 on Evolution Live tables. Maximum stakes vary by table — standard tables cap at £5,000 per straight-up, high-roller tables reach £500,000+. Always check the table limits before joining.
Where can I get help if roulette becomes a problem?expand_more
Use GAMSTOP to self-exclude from every UK-licensed site in one step (over 532,000 people have used it as of December 2024). BeGambleAware.org offers free confidential support, and the National Gambling Helpline is 0808 8020 133.
